Toshiba SD220E - Picture flash

Sometimes when the picture changes from a light area to a dark area, eg two people talking in a room, one in a light part of the room, the other in a dark part, I get a kind of flash across the screen for a fraction of a second while the colours/ contrast etc adjust themselves. I have an old TV, and I have the picture output set to Video.

Has anyone else seen this and is there a way to stop it?
